Cataract Removal, Intraocular Lens Insertion

When a naturally clear lens becomes clouded it is called a cataract. Most cataracts come about naturally as part of the aging process. Surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist to remove the cataract. The procedure involves an incision using a small tool (phacoemulsification or extracapsular extraction) or a laser, and almost always includes implanting an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) in its place. Local anesthesia is usually given via eyedrops or a shot, with adults typically remaining awake for the procedure which lasts no more than an hour.

Physicians usually won't remove cataracts in both eyes at once. If you need surgery performed on both eyes, you will be scheduled for separate surgeries, usually a few weeks apart.
